Alarming Number of Individuals Now Vape, Reports Global Health Body
More than 100 million individuals, including at least 15 million minors, now utilize e-cigarettes, driving a fresh surge of nicotine dependency, as stated by latest worldwide medical data.
Children are, on average, nine times more prone than grown-ups to engage in vaping, per available worldwide data.
Vaping devices are fueling a "new wave" of nicotine dependency, remarked a senior health official. "They are promoted as risk reduction but, truthfully, are addicting youth on nicotine earlier and risk weakening generations of advancement."
Young People Being 'Targeted'
"Countless of citizens are ceasing, or not taking up tobacco usage because of tobacco regulation initiatives by nations throughout the world," the official commented.
"As a reaction to this substantial advancement, the tobacco business is pushing back with novel nicotine items, forcefully targeting adolescents. Governments must act faster and more forcefully in implementing tested tobacco-control policies," the official further stated.
The vaping statistics are an estimate since some countries - 109 in all, and many in Africa and South-East Asia - lack statistics.
Based on the analysis, as of this past February this year, at least 86 million e-cigarette individuals were mature individuals, mostly in high-income countries.
And at minimum 15 million adolescents aged 13 and 15 already use e-cigarettes, according to surveys from 123 states.
While several states have tried to establish e-cigarette policies to address youth vaping in the past few years, by the close of 2024, 62 nations yet had no measure in operation, and 74 nations had no age restriction at which e-cigarettes are allowed to be bought, states the medical authority.
At the same time, tobacco usage has been dropping - from an projected 1.38 billion users in 2000 to 1.2 billion in 2024.
Occurrence of tobacco usage among females dropped the most - from 11% in 2010 to 6.6% in 2024.
Among males, the drop was from 41.4% in 2010 to 32.5% in 2024.
But a fifth of mature individuals globally still uses tobacco.
Tobacco use is associated to several diseases, such as cancer.
Professionals say vaping is significantly less damaging than traditional cigarettes, and can help you cease smoking. It is advised against for non-smokers.
Electronic cigarettes do not burn tobacco and do not produce resin or toxic gas, two of the most harmful components in tobacco vapors. They include nicotine, which can be dependency-creating.
