Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
