The US-based enterprise Waymo has revealed that its autonomous vehicles will be available for hire on London's streets beginning next year.
UK Capital Named as Leading European City for Self-Driving Ride-Hailing.
The UK capital will become the first European city to host an autonomous taxi service, akin to those already familiar in San Francisco and several American locations employing Waymo's innovative systems.
First Testing Phase to Start with Trained Operators.
Waymo stated that its vehicles are presently heading to London and will commence operating on the city's streets in the coming weeks with trained human specialists in control.
Waymo – originally created as a derivative from the tech giant's autonomous vehicle program and belonging to the same parent group – stated it would expand services and collaborate with the Department for Transport and Transport for London to secure the necessary approvals to deliver fully autonomous rides by 2026.
Expanding Interest in Autonomous Transport Across London.
Other firms, such as Uber and the British tech company Wayve, have also revealed their own intentions to trial self-driving vehicles in the capital next year.
This is in response to the government officials confirming it would fast-track rules enabling real-world tests to proceed before laws allowing autonomous cars passes in full.
“I'm delighted that Waymo intends to introduce their services to London next year, under our planned piloting scheme,” said the government minister, the secretary.
“Strengthening the autonomous vehicle market will enhance accessible travel alternatives in addition to creating employment, capital, and possibilities to the UK. Cutting-edge support like this will support our mission to be global pioneers in new technology and drive national renewal.”
Comprehensive Launch Expected After Regulatory Framework Takes Effect.
A broader introduction of driverless vehicles is expected in the UK after the related legislation is fully implemented in the latter part of 2027.
Waymo's Existing Ties in the UK and Beyond.
Waymo currently has connections to Britain after establishing its first European research base in Oxford in 2019.
It is also launching services in Tokyo using Jaguar Land Rover EVs, marking its only other current project outside the United States.
“We've demonstrated how to responsibly scale fully autonomous transport solutions, and we are eager to bring the positive impacts of our technology to the UK,” stated Waymo's co-chief executive, adding that the technology was “enhancing transport security and mobility more inclusive”.
Established Experience in the United States.
Waymo began its self-driving vehicles in 2020 and presently reports it has transported over ten million riders in the United States.
Regardless of some concerning incidents, Waymo stated that statistics showed that cars operated by people were linked to incidents that injured walkers 12 times more often than its driverless cars.
