UN Ends Penalties on Syria's Leader Prior to White House Visit
United Nations Security Council members approved to an American proposal ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his presidential meeting the following week.
He became transitional president after leading a rebel offensive that removed Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, concluding 13 years of internal conflict.
The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a strong political signal" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a new era" since Assad was deposed.
Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions as the leader of the Muslim faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), once connected to the extremist organization. Washington eliminated the group from its registry of global extremist entities in July.
More Penalties Removed
The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of the sanctions, posting on social media: "Syrian officials convey thanks to the United States and allied countries for assisting the country and its population."
Imminent Washington Talks
President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday comes after President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president had made "good progress" towards bringing peace to the previously divided state.
Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia while traveling through Arab nations.
After that meeting, America's leader characterized Sharaa as a "tough guy" having a "formative history".
His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria until he severed ties in 2016.
Earlier American Trip
Monday's visit will not be Sharaa's first trip to the United States during this period. This past fall, he made history as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the UN General Assembly in New York in almost 60 years.
In his speech, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position within the global community" and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.
